Thank you for your interest in joining our composting movement! Your one-time registration fee of $30 goes toward materials and maintenance. In exchange you will receive a kitchen composting bucket, along with our detailed list of do's and don'ts. Please be sure to follow the instructions carefully to ensure the success of our initiative!

The site is located directly on Lighthouse, west of the maintenance yard at Pilot Walk. In-season drop off hours are as follows:

• Sundays: 2-4 pm
• Wednesdays: 9 am -10 am
• Saturdays: 9 am - 10 am

COMPOSTING FACTS 

• When you compost, you significantly reduce your greenhouse gas emissions! Food waste that goes into landfill emits methane, a toxic greenhouse gas. In compost piles, food scraps are exposed to oxygen which eliminates the production of methane. 

• Reduced waste transport: About 20% of total waste comes from food. Diverting food scraps from the waste stream into local composting bins significantly reduces the load that needs to be carted off island. Plus, brown matter is an essential part of composting and reduces the number of cardboard boxes that have to be taken off island. This means fewer truckloads going on and off our island, reducing traffic and costing the Village less.

• Cleaner walks: Raccoons and deer seek out food waste in residential trash bins that are improperly latched. Moving food waste to a secure location in the Village means less trash on the walks.

• Soil: Compost can create soil within a matter of months. The soil we all help make will be donated to the Village, eliminating the need for buying and bringing in soil for landscaping needs.

• Community Building: Compost piles teach children about the environment and bring residents together to work toward something meaningful.
